The 1851 census for Shawfield shows William Ferguson 49 farming 30 acres and 270 of muirland assisted by his wife Margaret (Latta) 42, sons Robert 20 and William 17, daughter Margaret 10 and 1 female house servant.
The 1861 census for Shawfield shows William Ferguson 59 now farming 200 acres with his wife Margaret 52, son William 26 who is a shepherd and daughter Ann 22 a housemaid.
By 1871 this family were in Wallacetown, Auchinleck.
