Stairhill, Old Cumnock

Location OS  6 inch first edition near Woodhead on a hill SW of Cumnock.

David Millar Stairhill Horse tax rolls Five horses, four taxed

The 1841 census shows James Young 70 farming with his wife Margaret (Millar) 55 and children William 15, David 13, Isobel 12, Ann 9, and Thomas Crichton 3.

The Post Office Directory for 1851/2 has this address as Old Cumnock.
The tenant is James Young.
However, the 1851 census has James Young retired from farming and living in Townhead street, Cumnock.
By 1858, he had died, and his daughter was married Ardrossan and Saltcoats Herald November.

Farming North and West Hill is James Crichton 38, with his wife Elizabeth 31, and children Sarah 4 and Charles 2. The farm is 132 acres, and it is possible that Stairhill has been amalgamated with Hill.  Stair hill cottages are occupied by agricultural workers.

1856, March 17th  Kirk Session minutes William Wilson of Stairhill called as a witness

The Valuation Rolls show it as a house only by 1875, occupied by James Murray, and owned by the Marquis of Bute, still listed as Old Cumnock.
