Waterhead, New Cumnock

Location  OS 6 inch second edition, on the river Nith. Using the slider on the map shows the merest outline of where the farmstead was.

A stone saved from the ruins of nearby Waterhead Castle was embedded in the fabric of Waterhead farm but salvaged when the farm was demolished.

Scotlands Places of 1855/57 describes this as a good farmhouse occupied by Messrs Roxburgh

Census
1841 David 60 and Margaret 60 Weir with Jane 25, Sarah 20, William 20, Ann 15, and Robert 3. Also Mary McLimond 15, Jane Weir 10, Janet Hyslop 15, Helen Clark 35, and Jane McKnight 70.

1851 census shows James Roxburgh 34 (farmer of 300 acres, 3 labourers) wife Christina (Wilson) her mother and 3 Wilson siblings, , their 3 small children, his father Daniel Roxburgh a visitor and 3 servants
1861 James Roxborough, 46  Farmer Of 381 Acres (emp Man), Christina 6 children 2 servants.  In the Ardrossan and Saltcoats Herald of 1861 there is a death announcement for William Nelson age 26.
1871 James Roxborough, 55 Farmer Of 52 Acres (300 Arable) Employing 2 Man 3 Woman 1 Boy, Christina 48, 8 children and a boy.  Alexander Roxburgh was awarded a prize for shooting with his troop of Yeomanry.
The 1881 census shows James Roxburgh 65, farmer.  His wife Christina 57, daughters Euphemia 31, and Janet 22, sons James 18, and William 15, and grand children Jane Roxburgh 8 and James 2 also live at Waterhead farm.  There is no indication of acreage

James Roxburgh died in March 1891, and in the census, Christina and daughter Euphemia are living in Mansfield Cottage.

1891 John Miller 50 and brothers Thomas 40 and Matthew 37 are farming with servants Robert Hewitson 16, Annie Agnew 28, Elizabeth Kelly 17, and Marion Stevenson 21.
There is an announcement in the Ardrossan and Saltcoats Herald 1897 of the sudden death of Thomas Miller aged 44.  

David Struthers was previously in Dornal farm, Auchinleck.
1901 David Struthers 52 and wife Margaret 44 with family Jeanie 3, Sarah 17, Margaret 14, David 12, William 9, and servant John Hume 17
