The 1841 census shows
Shields being occupied by agricultural labourer
James Osburn 25, wife Elizabeth 20 and children John 2 and William 4mths.
The 1851 census shows Shiel now being occupied by agricultural labourer Hugh Dickson 38, wife Elizabeth 41, daughter Elizabeth 2 and Hugh Murray 30 a visiting agricultural labourer.
The 1861 census shows Shield still being occupied by Hugh Dickson 44 agricultural labourer, wife Elizabeth 48, daughter Elizabeth 12 and son Hugh 2.
The 1871 census shows Shiel of Dalricket now being occupied by Alexander Black a 23yr old labourer at the coalpit, his wife Mary 23 who is a bower, children Agnes 2 and Susan 1 and Sarah Campbell an 18yr old general servant.
The 1881 census for Shield shows Alexander McKerrow a 71yr old dairyman and his wife Jane McKerrow 51 living there.
The 1891 census for Shiel (Bowing) shows Alexander Black 43 a general labourer living there again along with wife Mary (Sharp) 43 who is a dairymaid, daughters Agnes 22, Susan 21, also dairymaids, and daughters Jane 12, Margaret 10, Isabella 6, and sons James 8, Alexander 3, and Andrew 1.
The 1901 census shows daughter Agnes K Black 32 dairy keeper now living at Shiel along with her son John McMinn Black who is 1yr old, her sister Margaret Black 20 who is a general servant and her 7yr old niece Isabella Black.
Father Alexander Black is now the dairyman at Dalricket Mill. He died at Dalricket Mill 9/1/1926.
