Hill of Auchinleck or Affleckhill, had several divisions, including Merlinhall and parks beside the village. Its houses built in 1785, its parks and divisions were let to Alexander Campbell in 1782 and 1791, to John Howet till Dec 1784, to James Wilson, a tailor who had a house in Kirkland, in 1787 and 1794, to William Halbert in 1787 and 1789, to James Grinlay in Merland in 1787 and 1790, to Janet Paton and her son in 1789, to David Moodie in Merland in 1790, and to Margaret Gibson in Merland in 1793. Its other parks were occupied by William Campbell, James Campbell, Hugh Peden and Robert Murdoch in 1791.

High Park, a park in Hill of Auchinleck, was let in 1781 to a servant of Lord Auchinleck, Mungo Reid, who was succeeded in 1794 by William Campbell.

Merlinhall was let to John Hinchan and Robert Steele in Auchinleck village in 1786 and Mungo Reid in High Park in 1787.

1855/1857  Merlinhill  Rental Mr Boswell factor, Mr Wallace steward, Barony Road, A cottage & garden at present unoccupied. The property of Sir James Boswell.

The 1851 census shows John Sillars 58 farmer of 9 acres at Hill and his wife Mary 64.

The 1861 census shows William Campbell 32 mason living at Main Street, Auchinleck along with his wife Jane 34 (Vallance) and their 3 sons John 9, James 3 and Hugh 2.

Jane Campbell (Vallance) died at Hill 5/4/1866

The 1871 census shows William Campbell 41 mason journeyman and farmer of 9 acres arable farming The Hill with his wife Janet 34 (Simpson), son James 13 a snuff box maker's apprentice, son Hugh 10, daughter Hannah 7 and 1 female domestic servant.

1881 William Campbell 51, mason and farmer residing at Merlinhill  The farm is 11 acres arable and he shares the house with his wife Janet 44,  son James 23 mason (builder hewer), twins William and George,9, sons Lawrence 7, and Alexander 2, and daughters Jessie 5, and Margaret 1.

William Campbell died 20/6/1889

The 1891 census shows Janet Campbell 54 (Simpson) now a farmer's widow farming Merlin Hill. Also living there is her step-son James a 33yr old mason, son Alexander 12 and daughter Maggie 11.

The 1901 census shows Marlin Hill Farm being occupied by farmer (cow feeder) Janet Campbell 64. Her sons George 29 and Lawrence 27 are pit roadsmen and daughter Maggie 21 is a dressmaker.

....the site chosen for the pit (Highhouse Pit) was Merlinhill Farm, which was demolished, and six fields were taken over for the surface buildings and spoil heap.

Valuation  Roll 1865 - 1885 prop. Lady Boswell, tenant William Campbell.  1925 prop. Col. J D Boswell, no further entries for tenants.
