The 1881 census for Penbrech, Auchinleck shows Walter now 66 and still a shepherd living there with his wife Isabella 58, daughters Isabella 18 (a general domestic) and Agnes 14 and grandchilden Janet Thorburn 8 and John Brown 5.
The 1891 census for Penbreck, Auchinleck shows Walter a 76yrs old shepherd, wife Isabella 68, daughter Isabella 28 a farm servant, daughter Agnes 24 a general domestic, grandson John Brown a 15yr old shepherd and grand-daughter Violet Templeton Craig 5.

My Dad can remember going there with his father to pick up a few hill cows many years ago in a Landrover and trailer, he said it was the worst journey there that he can remember due to a very old road with lots of very dodgy bits that looked unpassable! Where was the road into it? would it be out a hill road in the Kirkconnel area or out past the Lethens at New Cumnock? (Shona Stevenson on Facebook)
