The 1841 Census for Lithans shows William Riddle 60 farmer, his wife Jane 50, son John 23, son William 14, Alexander Cumming 11, Margaret Campbell 80, William Mearns 29, Mary Mearns 20 and infant Jane Mearns.

The 1851 census for Lithans shows Jane Riddel widow 66 farmer of 600 acres, son John Riddel 34 who is described as ‘insane’ , James Riddel 28 an agricultural labourer and Jane Thomson a 15yr old house servant.
Jane aka Jean’s maiden surname was Crichton 

The 1861 census for Letham shows John Riddle 44 shepherd, wife Margaret 29, children William 7, Robert S., Margaret P. 4, Janet C. 2, infant Catherine, mother Jean Riddle 76 and Catherine Graham a 13yr old nurserymaid.
Jean Riddle died 19/1/1871

The 1871 census for The Lithans shows Hugh Vallance a 33yr old shepherd living there along with his wife Sarah 32, children Ealen 12, David 11, Agnes 9, William 6, John P. 5, Hugh 2 and Isabella 1.

The 1881 census shows Lethans Farm now being occupied by shepherd James Templeton 27, his wife Agnes 23, daughter Mary 4, son Walter 2 and infant son William.

The 1891 census for Lithans shows James Ferguson a 46yr old shepherd now living there with his wife Jane 38, sons David 13, William 11 & James 7 and daughters Margaret 9, Jane 5, Sarah 2 and infant Agnes.

The 1901 census for Lethans shows shepherd David Forsyth 54, wife Janet 47 and daughter Janet B. 18
