1851 Census - Craigshiel, New Cumnock
Robert McNight 65 - farmer of 110 acres wife Susannah (Rankin Campbell) 31, and son Gavin under 1.  Servants are Mary Wilson 21, Grace Murdoch 15, and James Campbell 32, (brother in law)
Susanna's father was Gavin Campbell from Linn, New Cumnock.





John O'Groat Journal April 1851
The North British Mail reported that there had been a number of burglaries in the area preceding this, one being at the grocer shop of the Hillhouse family in Schaw.
And later that year.....

The John O'Groat Journal of June 18th has an article that reports the outcome of the court case with the two main protagonists each being deported for twenty one years.

Susanna Rankine McKnight married John Lee in New Cumnock in 1862.
The census of 1871 finds Gavin McKnight age 20, born in New Cumnock as a grocer in Govan, Hutchesontown, Lanarkshire.
