Census
1841 shows William Howatson 80 farmer, sons William 45, John 45, George 35 and daughter Jennet 35. Also on the census is Jennet Johnston 20, Jane Johnston 15 and Mary Duncan 50.
NB. William Howatson married Janet Smith 23/11/1790 Ochiltree

In 1851 William Howatson is now 94 and farming 130 acres arable & 200 acres hill pasture emp 7 labourers. He is assisted by his unmarried children William 58, John 57, George 47 and Janet 49 along with farm labourer John Hutchison 18, dairymaid Jane Murray 23 and house servant Mary Cameron 17. 

The 1861 census shows oldest son William 68 farming 330 acres along with his unmarried brother John 67 who is a fund holder, unmarried sister Janet 59 who is also a fund holder, James Murray 25 ploughman, William Montgomerie 16 agricultural labourer, Helen Williamson a 24yr old dairymaid and Elizabeth Geddes 23 domestic servant.

By 1871 69 yr old unmarried Janet Howatson is in charge farming 365 acres of which 200 are hill pasture. She is assisted by her 23yr old nephew Robert Howatson who is the farm manager, farm servants David Graham 32 & William Routledge 17, domestic servants Marion Wilson 27 & Agnes Wilson 24 and Peter McDowall age 9 who is described as a servant and scholar. They are being visited by  Janet's married niece Herries McSkiming who is a watchmaker's wife.

The 1881 census shows nephew Robert Howatson 33, born in New Luce, Wigtown , farming 300 acres of which 100 are arable (employing 2 men & 1 woman), his wife Joan 35, children Robert 5, Andrew 3 & Jane 2, farm servants Michael McGoveran 25 & James Shanks 12, dairymaid Elizabeth Hopkins, cook Mary Dunsmore age 13yrs and another 13yr old girl Maggie Rafferty who is a nurse.

By 1891 Henry Howat 43 is farming Darntaggart with wife Agnes (Brown) 43 and servants Jannet McNeil 18 who is a general domestic and William Lyons 16 farm servant.
Henry Howat is the nephew of Henry Howat, Rottenrow, Ochiltree.

1901 shows Hendry Howat 52, and a widower with his servants Catherine McAtee 39, housekeeper, Jane Hutson 17 general servant and Hugh Paterson17 who is a farm servant.
NB Henry’s wife was Agnes Brown of Auchlin
