Hill (of Leifnorris), Old Cumnock

James Wardrop was a grandson of Thomas Wardrop, Crofthead , Cumnock and farmed Hill at Cumnock ( next to Knockterra and Dumfries House Station). Sometimes I've seen it called Hill of Leifnoris, as that is the old name for Dumfries House.

Location 55 26 32N, 4 18 30W

‘Leifnorris is first recorded in 1440 and was held by the Craufuirds who erected a strong stone tower house and held it till the mid-seventeenth century. A mile to the east stood Terrinzean Castle, earlier known as Craufurdstoun. This too belonged to a branch of the Craufuirds before 1467, when it passed to the Earl of Arran and eventually to the Earl of Loudoun (one of whose titles is Baron Terrinzean). The ruins of Leifnorris and Terrinzean were excavated by the third Marquess of Bute and the latter partially restored’. - Source: The New History of Cumnock by John Strawhorn (page 16/17)

The McCowans in Hill and elsewhere are well documented by their descendants in Canada http://mccowan.org/your.htm
