The Howat family farmed at Netherton then Farden. Previous generations farmed Whitehill Cumnock and  Muirston Ochiltree.

The family moved from Netherton to Farden about 1931. The first year he was there they wintered hogs for James Gourlay of Gourly farming company. The second year he was approached by Dalmeny estates (Lord Roseberry) and offered  "a few shillingsmore" he accepted. Jame Gourly said he would match the price but father had principles and did not go back. The hog wintering was taken by Dalmeny estates every year until the year my father died in 2000.The following year (2001) it was again let to the Gourly family through myself. (Ian Howat)
