Dornal Estate was purchased by Charles Howatson (1832-1918) in 1865.

In 1900 Howatson owned Dornal, Greenside, Shawfield, Whiteholm, High Glenmuir, Laigh Glenmuir, Duncanziemere, Hillhead and Wallaceton within Auchinleck Parish.

The 1851 census shows John Murdoch 65 late farmer occupying Dornal along with  2 ploughmen, 2 male farm labourers, 1 housemaid, 1 dairyman and 1 female dairy assistant.
The 1861 census shows Hugh McKerrow 51 a widower, previously a shepherd at Whiteholm, Auchinleck now farming 600 acres  along with his daughters Elizabeth 24, Margaret 21, sons John 20 and William 18, sister-in-law Isabella McKerrow 36 working as a dairymaid, nephew William 14 working as an agricultural labourer, 1 ploughman, 1 shepherd and 1 cow-herd (boy).
By 1871 Hugh was working as a cattle dealer and living at Barrhill  Road, Cumnock where he died in 1886. Cumnock Connections Tree
The 1871 census shows James McCree 31, a farm servant, occupying Dornal with his wife Elizabeth, their 4 children  ages 5yrs and under and 1 farm servant.  
The 1881 census shows David Struthers 32, his wife Margaret 25 (Bryson) and David's unmarried brother Andrew Struthers  45 (joint farmer) are farming 300 acres, 200 arable and employ 2 girls and 1 boy. Also living there is David & Margaret's infant daughter Jeanie Boyd Struthers, 1 female servant, 1 nurse age 11yrs and 1 male farm servant.
The 1891 census shows David Struthers 42 farming Dornal with his wife Margaret G.B. 34, daughters Jeanie B. 10, Sarah W. 7 and Margaret 4, farmer brother Andrew 53 and unmarried, 2 female domestic servants and 1 male farm servant. By 1901 this family is in Waterhead Farm, New Cumnock.
The 1901 census shows Dornal now being farmed by brother Alexander Struthers 57 along with his wife Margaret (Law) 47, sons Robert 25, James 23, Alexander 18, daughters Jeanie 15 and Sarah 12, son Andrew 3 and 1 female general servant. (This family was in Whiteholm of Dornal Farm Lugar in 1891)
