Templand, Auchinleck

Also Templand Mains.

Location Templand and Templand Mains not shown on Roy or OS maps but Temple shown at 55 27 54N, 4 18 35W.

Horse Tax 1797-98 John McClownan, Templand Mains,  4 horses , 2 taxed . Name in  Cumnock is   usually  McCowan - R D Hunter  claimed  McCowan ancestors.

'The Knights Templars seem to have held property in Cumnock, as the phrase Temple Lands (terrae templariae) occurs in old records. No trace of them, however, is now to be found in our parish, though Temple and Templand are to be met with in Auchinleck'

Regality of Templand

Templand, part of the regality acquired in 1734 from Thomas Wallace, included Blackston, Dykes, Stepends, Vicarsbank, Waterside of Templand and (as jointure lands) Roadinghead and Templand Mains.
Vicarsbank, acquired as part of Templand, in 1734, comprised Bank and Fauld and was contiguous to Underwood.
Waterside and Douglasholm acquired as part of Templand in 1734, adjoined Stepends by Craikston.

The 1851 census for Templand shows Robert Dalglesh 37 farming 80 acres and employing 1 labourer and seedman. Also living there is his wife Cochrane 35 (Drummond), their sons Hugh 6, James 5, William (infant) and their daughter Agnes W 3, Robert's widowed father Hugh 68 a retired farmer, Aunt Margaret Borland 67 a dressmaker and 2 female house servants.  (Hugh's wife was Mary Borland)
The 1861 census for Templand shows Robert Dalglish 47 seed merchant and farmer of 86 acres employing 1 man and 1 woman. He is assisted by his wife Cochrane 45, son Hugh 16 an agricultural labourer, sons James 15, William 10, daughters Agnes W 13, Mary Ann 8, Cochrane 6 (she died in 1868), ploughman Robert Boswell 27 and a dairymaid.
The 1871 census for Templand Farm shows Robert Dalglish 57 farming 101 acres (1 arable) assisted by his wife Cochrane 55, son Hugh 26, son James 25 a seed merchant, son William 20 a tweed manufacturer, daughter Mary Ann 18 and 1 dairymaid.
Cochrane Dalgleish died 6/11/1874
In the 1881 census for Templand Farm shows Robert Dalgleish 67 now a widower farming 100 acres all arable employing 1 man and 1 boy assisted by son Hugh 36, son-in-law Thomas Hunter 30 a seed grain and cheese merchant employing 1 man, Robert's daughter Mary Ann Hunter 28 seedman's wife, grandchildren William Hunter 3 and Robert D Hunter 1 and 1 female domestic servant.
Robert died 12/2/1889
The 1891 census shows Templand Mains now being farmed by son-in-law Thomas Hunter 40 farmer & seed merchant along with his wife Mary Ann 38, sons William 13 & Robert D 11, unmarried brother-in-law Hugh Dalgliesh 46, unmarried brother William Hunter 32 an ironmonger and 1 female domestic servant.
The 1901 census shows Thomas Hunter 50 grain merchant and farmer still occupying Templand along with his wife Mary Ann 48, son William 23 assistant farmer, son Thomas 8, daughter Ella 8, son Hugh 5 and 2 female general servants.
