1851 census has John Mitchell, 48, farmer of 68 acres employing 3 Man 1 Boy 2 Women, And 1 Girl with wife Jane (McCormick) 29, dtr Margaret 8, dtr Mary 7, son Hugh 5, 1 Male farm servant. 1 shepherd, 1 Male cow herd and 3 female domestic servants.
The 1861 census shows James Clark 31 grazier of 1200 acres employing 2 labourers, 1 boy and 1 girl. Margaret Clark 23 his cousin also lives there working as a dairymaid along with Elizabeth Currie dairymaid, 1 Male Byre attender, 1 girl herd, and 1 thatcher boarding.
The 1871 census shows James Clark 41 farmer of 1100 acres of which 400 are arable employing 3 men and 2 women along with his wife Maggie (Smith) 26, son James 5, John Clark 42 his brother who is a box maker, 2 ploughmen, 1 dairymaid, 1 female general servant and a visiting herd boy.
The 1881 census shows Margaret Clark 36 and now a widow (James died 26/11/1873) farming 1000 acres 600 arable employing 4 men, 3 girls with the assistance of her son James 16, John Clark 52 her brother-in-law who is a general servant, her niece Helen Clark 12, 3 Male general domestics and 3 female general domestics.
The 1891 census shows widow Margaret 46 farming Common helped by her son James 25, 2 female farm servants, 3 male farm servants, 1 male farm servant who is a boarder and 1 male farm servant who is visiting.
The 1901 census shows Margaret Clark 56 farming Common Farm with her niece Christina I Murray 21, 2 female domestic servants, 1 shepherd, 2 male farm labourers and 1 male cow herd.
James Clark, Common Farm b1865 - d1926 . Noted Blackface sheep breeder at Crossflat, Muirkirk and Carskeoch, Patna ( where he died) . His father was killed by a mineral train, after an accident at a level crossing near the Common, when James was aged nine.
