1851 Ayrshire directory show Hugh Merrie farmer Kyle

The 1851 census shows Hugh Merry a widower of 54yrs managing 70 acres arable and near 3000 of muir land. Also living there are John Lammie shepherd, John Ewing farm labourer and Janet Gibson dairymaid.

The 1861 census shows John Latta * 36 now farming 1870 acres at Kyle and employing 4 men and 2 women. He is assisted by his wife Agnes (Young) 32. They have 3 sons Robert 5, William 3 and John 1. One dairymaid, 1 female domestic servant, 1 ploughman and 1 herd boy are also recorded on the census.

The 1871 census for Kyle shows John Latta 46 farming 7000 acres of which 150 are arable along with his wife Agnes 41, daughter Margaret 16, son Robert 15, son John 11, son Thomas 9, daughters Jane 7, Anabella 5, Janet 3 and 1 female servant.

1881 census shows Kyle farmhouse occupied by John Latta 56 farming 2500 acres, 70 arable and employing 3 shepherds. He is assisted by his wife Agnes 52, daughters Agnes 28, Margaret 26, Jane 17, Annabella 15, Janet 13, Mary 6 and sons Robert 25, John 21 and William 9 and 1 female general domestic.
John and wife Agnes and some of the family then moved to Boylston in Old Cumnock

The 1891 census shows Kyle Farm now being farmed by sons Robert 35 and John 31 both unmarried assisted by their sisters Margaret 37 and Jessie 23, 1 male farm servant and 1 female domestic servant.

The 1901 census shows brothers Robert & John still farming Kyle along with sister Margaret housekeeper, 1 female general servant and 1 shepherd.

* information from Ian Latta - The original John Latta who first came to Cumnock and lived at Bridgend, came from Monkton area originally and his son became  a ‘Carter’ to Lord Bute and a cheese dealer, travelling to Edinburgh twice weekly with two carts, armed with a pistol as the roads were dangerous places and he used to carry money for his lordship. That was how he got the tenancy of Kyle Farm in 1835, which my dad’s cousins held until 1992.
