Chipperlagan, Ochiltree

Location OS six inch  second edition Chipperlaigan
the Chipperlaigen Wood where Lord Eglinton's hounds often hunted is still there today.

Transferred from the parish of Ochiltree to the parish of Stair (Hay Shennan report 1889)

1851-2 Ayrshire directory has William Bowman (c)  at Chipperleggan, Ochiltree
A death notice in the Ardrossan and Saltcoats Herald of 1857 records the death of  "Mary, fourth daughter of the late Mr John Bowman of Chipperlaggan"

1841 William Bowman 25, Jane Bowman 25, and servants Robert Smith 17, and Mary Lochrain 17.
1851 William 38 & Jane Bowman 40 - farmer of 93 acres employing 2 labourers. With them are John Smith 5, nephew, and servants William Brown 16, and William Smith 15.
1861 William 47 & Jean Bowman 49- farmer of 125 acres employing 1 labourer and 1 boy. Now they have nephew Andrew Brown 14, John Milligan 30 visiting, and Agnes Kennedy 22 domestic servant
1871 William Bowman 57 and a widower- farmer of 114 acres 111 arable emp 2 labourers 1 boy.  He has servants John Shearer 14, Agness Muir 15, and Stewart Davidson visitor 66, a drover.
1881 William 66 & Mary Bowman 49- farmer of 114 acres of which 108 are arable emp 1 man 1 woman. Jessie Smith 14 is their general domestic. William married Mary Carnie from Maybole.
1891 William  78 & Mary Bowman 56 - farmer, with farm servants William Smith 18, and Martha Ballington 14.  They also have two tramps staying.  They are Thomas Linton 58, and Ann Hodge 60.

Chipperlagan was then recorded is the parish of Stair

1901 Mary Bowman, widow 66 with Jane Hinds 23 and Thomas Jamieson 36.
When Mary died in 1917, she left everything in her will to Jane Hinds.

Ploughing
"...Some of those before me must have seen "Chipperleggan" at a match, and I am sure they will admit that, besides being himself "a firm houder, " that as a "hander" he had few superiors.

At Cumnock ploughing match in 1869 Andrew Brown, ploughman to William Bowman was also a prizewinner.
