The 1851 census for McCoshton, Stair shows William Brown 64 farmer of 35 acres employing 1 man. He is assisted by his wife Ann 61, daughter Margaret 26, daughter Janet 21 and 73yr old William Gemmell (born in Cumnock in 1778). Also residing there is his son-in-law William Munn 30 who is a blacksmith and his children Ann Munn 2 and infant son William Munn.
The 1861 census shows wife Annie 69 is now a widow and farming 35 acres along with her daughter Mary Brown 36 who is also a widow. Her grandchildren William Munn 10 and William Hutchen 2 are living with them.
By 1871 McCoshton, Stair is occupied by 55 yr old William Courtney who is farming 43 acres arable along with his wife Mary Ann 46. He is assisted by his step-children Annie Munn 22 and William Munn 20. Thomas B Courtney 5 is also living there.
The 1881 census for McCoshton, Stair shows Thomas Hutchison 38 farming 47 acres arable along with his wife Jane 31 (Shennan). Thomas and Jane were married on 15th December 1871 in Dailly, Ayrshire. They have four children living with them - son James 11 and daughters Agnes 7, Janet 6 & Jane 3.
Thomas Hutchison 49 is still farming McCoshton, Stair in 1891. He is also described as a carrier. Also living there is his wife Jane 41 along with their children Janet 16, Jane 13, James 11, Margaret 7, Thomas 4 and William 2.
By the 1901 census McCoshton has been moved into the Parish of Ochiltree because of boundary changes.
The 1901 census shows McCoshton, Ochiltree still being farmed by 59yr old Thomas Hutchison and his wife Jane 51. They are assisted by sons James 21, Thomas 14 & William 12 and their daughters Jane 23 and Maggie 17.
