The 1841 census for Cairnsten, Stair, shows Adam Hillhouse 36, his wife Jane (Mills) 30, children James 9, William 7, John 6, Adam 4, Robert 2, infant Margaret and 18yr old Mary Kelly.
The 1851 census for Cairnston, Stair shows David McFadzen 42 farming 60 acres and employing 1 man. He is assisted by his wife Agnes 50, son David who is a labourer and daughter Ann 10. Ann Hutchisson a 30yr old hand sewer is visiting.
The 1861 census shows Cairnston, Stair is now being tenanted by Andrew McGill 42 who is farming 47 acres. Also living there is his wife Margaret 45, daughter Agnes 16, daughter Margaret 13, son Andrew 12, daughter Elizabeth 9, son James 6, grandson Andrew Hamilton 1 and adopted daughter Ann McGill 3.

By 1871 Henry Cowan 60 has moved into Cairnston, Stair (from Carleverock) and is farming 100 acres arable. He is assisted by his wife Jane 67, daughter Mary 30 who is the dairymaid, son Henry 29 who is a labourer, son Adam 27 a ploughman and son James 23 who is also a labourer.
The 1881 census for Cairnston, Stair tells us that Henry Cowan 70 is now a widower farming 181 acres and employing 1 girl. Also living there is his daughter Mary 39, son Henry 39 who is a cattle dealer, son Adam 35, son James 32 and 19yr old granddaughter Mary A. Cowan who is a servant.
By 1891 we have another change of tenancy. John Wilson 40 is farming there with his wife Mary T. who is 38. They have a large family of 7 children - Abigail 13, Helen S. 11, Mary T. 9, David F. 8, William S. 5, John 3 and Margaret 1. They are assisted by Catherine McAtee an 18yr old general servant and John Hogg 15 a farm servant.
The 1901 census shows Cairnston is now in the Parish of Ochiltree. It is tenanted by John Lymburn 34 along with his wife Agnes Russell Lymburn 34, their children Maggie 6, James 4, Jane 2 and infant Agnes R. Also living there is 60yr old widowed mother-in-law Margaret McDowall who was born in Ireland, nephew James Lymburn 20 farm servant and 18yr old general servant Elizabeth Clark.
John Lymburn continued to farm Cairnston as a tenant until approximately 1920 when he became the proprietor and occupier.

The 1841 census for Carleverock, Stair, shows Henry Cowan 30, Jane Cowan 35, Mary Cowan 65, William Cowan 4, Jean Cowan 2, Mary Cowan 1, Andrew Trodden 15 and Martha Donaldson 60.
The 1851 census for Carleverock shows Henry Cowan 41 farming 40 acres assisted by his wife Jean 46. Their children are William 14 who is a labourer, daughter Mary 11, son Henry 9, son Adam 8 and son James 3.
The 1861 census for Carleverock, Stair shows Henry Cowan still farming 40 acres assisted by his wife Jane 56, daughter Mary 21 who is the dairymaid, son Henry a ploughman, son Adam 18 a scholar and son James 13.
By 1871 Henry and his family have moved to Cairnston. (see above)
