The 1851 census for Barbeth, Stair shows John Knox age 28 farmer of 40 acres, his wife Margaret 30 (Murdoch daughter of deceased James) , son John 8, son James 7, infant daughter Sarah, Mary Harvie a 12yr old servant and John McClelland 18.
The 1861 census for High Barbeth , Stair shows John Knox 38 farming 42 acres, wife Margaret 40, sons John 18 and James 17 who are both ploughmen, daughter Sarah 10, son Henry 7 and son William 5.
The 1871 census for South Barbeth, Stair shows John Knox 48 now farming 67 acres arable assisted by his wife Margaret 50 and their children John 28, Sarah 20, Henry 17 and William 14 who are all employed on the farm. They also have a younger daughter Catherine age 8.
The 1881 census for Barbeth, Stair shows John Knox 58 farmer of 69 acres employing own family. These are his wife Margaret 60 and unmarried children John 38 and Sarah 30.
Margaret died in 1887 at Stair.
The 1891 census for High Barbeth, Stair shows widower John Knox 68 farmer. He is assisted by his son John 48, Sarah 38 and general domestic Mary White 17.

The 1901 census for Barbeth, Ochiltree show son John 58 and single has taken over the running of the farm assisted by his unmarried sister Sarah 49 and Elizabeth Campbell 17 domestic servant.

from 1871 North Barbeth was occupied by William Cowan and his family. In 1871 & 1881 he is described as a carter and in 1891 as a contractor and posting master. His son Henry is also a contractor and posting master.
The 1901 census shows North Barbeth is occupied by Margaret H. Cowan 66. She is now a widow and she is described as Farmers Worker . Also living there are her son Henry 36 farmer contractor, Jane 31 daughter who is a teacher, son James 28 a carting contractor, daughter Agnes 24 a dressmaker, Helen 22 farmer's daughter, Robert Watt 22 a servant carter and George Mossie 20 a farm servant.
