High Linn, New Cumnock

 Or Upper Linn/Lynn

Upper Linn - various modes of spelling Upper Linn, High Linn, Linn House, Linn
A farmhouse on Mansefield Estate. It derives its name from a linn in its vicinity.

Linn is a Scots word for waterfall, cataract, cascade of water.

No Farm Horse Tax found



The 1841 census for High Linn shows Thomas Brown a 78yr old bower living there with Jane Brown 65, Margaret Brown 25, William Touny 15 servant, Mary Black 16 farm servant and Elizabeth Alexander 21 a lodger.

The 1851 census shows Andrew Kerr 45 an agricultural labourer (born in Knockburnie the son of John Kerr & Betty Gemmell)) with his wife Margaret (Vass) 43, daughter Grace 18 & Elizabeth 16 both hand sewers, son Andrew 11 and daughters Margaret 9 & Susanna 5.

The 1861 census for High Linn shows Andrew Kerr 55 is now a dairyman.  Also living there is his wife Margaret 53 and their daughters Margaret 18 who is a dairymaid and Susan 14 who is a dairy assistant.

The 1871 census for High Linn shows dairyman Andrew Kerr 65 with his wife Margaret 64, daughters Margaret 28 & Susan 24 and James Kerr their 8yr old grandson.
Andrew Kerr died 1/6/1880 at Mansefield Cottage, New Cumnock

The 1881 census shows High Linn now being occupied by Alexander Houston a 36yr old dairyman/ploughman, his wife Mary, their sons George 9, David 8, Alexander 6 & James 5 months and their daughters Jessie B. 11, Jane G. 4 and Agnes B. 2. They are assisted by Elizabeth Crawford 16 general servant.

The 1891 census shows Catherine Hunter 76 living there as housekeeper along with her 38yr old son Andrew Greenshields who is a farm steward and her granddaughter Catherine Dickson 20 a domestic servant.

The 1901 census for Upper Lynn shows Andrew Greenshields 48 is now a ploughman and Annie Dickson 28 is housekeeper.
