Drongan Mains, Ochiltree

Transferred from the parish of Stair to the parish of Ochiltree in 1892 (Hay Shennan Report on Scotlands Places)

Drongan Castle fron Scotlands Places 1855/57-

There is now nothing remaining of this Castle but a portion of the ruined walls averaging in height from 2 to 15 feet. It is situated close to the farm house of Drongan Mains On the property of Alexander Oswald Esqr.

1851 Alexander Grieve 48, farmer of 62 acres employing 1 man. He is farming with brother Adam 45, and sisters Ann 42, Agnes 39, and Mary 35
1861 Alexander Grive 58 farmer of 78 acres with brother Adam 55 and sister Ann 52, and servant Mary Donald 27.
In 1871 the Greive family have retired to Drongan Cottage.

1871 Robert Wilson 44 farming 80 acres with servants Mary Mackie 25, dairymaid, Marion Watt 17, general domestic, and James Brackenridge 24, farm servant.

The death announcement for Robert Wilson, aged 53, was in the Ayr Advertiser, May 1879. Headstone at Stair.

1881 Mary Wilson (Mackie) widow, 35 farmer of 72 acres arable employing 2 men and 1 girl.  She has children Robert 7, Maggie 5, Richard 3, and Elspeth 2, and servants James Mackie 22, Maggie Short 18, and Archibald McCallum 17. Four children of Mary Mackie and Robert Wilson were baptised at Stair church.
The Mackie family came from Stewarton, and in 1891 Mary has moved with her family to Newton Upon Ayr, and has another 5 year old daughter. Her brother James has taken over the farm tenancy.

1891 James Mackie 33, farmer with wife Elizabeth (McCallum) 29, and children Richard 5, James 4, Archibald 1.  Visiting is Richard Wilson 13, and apprentice clerk, and servants are Colin McCallum 20, and Williamina Boyd 15.
1901 James Mackie 43, with wife Elizabeth 39, and children Richard 15, James 14, Archibald 11, Duncan 9, Elizabeth 7, and Maggie 4.  Their servant is Maggie Jackson 16, dairymaid.
