Transferred from the parish of Stair to the parish of Ochiltree (Hay Shennan report 1889), It was built over by the expansion of Drongan.
Lane farmhouse was erected in 1846 - the house originally had a datestone. It was demolished in 1954 to allow erection of Drongan Junior Secondary School. (Dane Love)

In the 1841 census for Lane, only agricultural labourer families are listed. They are Charles Duncan 28,Agnes Duncan 24 and 1 month old Charles. In the next house at Lane are David Roy 50, Jannet 50, and Jean 15, James 10 and Jannet 8.
1851 for Lane, Stair, Kyle, Ayrsire
John Douglas 40, and wife Helen 28, are farming 90 acres employing 1 man. They have children Margaret 2 and John 1. Robert Goodwen 19 is their farm servant, and Mary McCurdie 18 and Elizabeth Person 14 are house servants.
1861 John Lindsay 41 and Elesabath 32, are farming 130 acres at Lane, Stair, Ayrshire.
Their children are Mary 4, Elesabath 2 and James 1.
Servants are Alexander Thom 25 plowman, Robert Gray 15 Ag Lab, Grace Drummond 19, dairymaid, and Agnes Hair 16, dairymaid.
1871 and the same Lindsay family are at Lane, but they have added to their family with William 9, Maggie 7, Agnes 4 and John 1.
Their servants are Annie Farquhar 17, John Gibson 18, and James McKelnin 14.
1881 Elizabeth Lindsay 50, is farmer of 120 acres employing 1 man and 2 women and her status is 'Married' although there is no mention of John. Her children at home are James 21, Agnes 14, John 11, and Jane 7.
Their servants are Elizabeth Shearer 21, Agness Lees 15, and Samuel Harris 22.
James Lindsay is possibly the one listed in Cumnock Connections, and if that is the correct one, he emigrated to Canada.
1891 James D Gibson 42, and wife Marion 39 are farming at Lane Farm, Stair.
They have four children, Janet 13, Andrew 11, Daniel 10, and Maggie 7. Their servants are Maggie Robertson 17, domestic and Peter Clowes 13 farm servant.
1901 John Knox 72 and wife Agnes 67 are farming with their family David 38, John 31, Bella 27, and Mary Brycon 25. They also have their grand-daughter Nancy Knox 17.

From 1910 in the Valuation Rolls, David Knox is proprietor/occupier until he retired to Woodend Cottage, Drongan, by 1935. He had married his housekeeper Mary Jane Smith.

Lane farm no longer exists as its lands and farm buildings have been encroached by Drongan village, but the name lives on at Lane Crescent, Drongan.
