Underwood formerly belonged to Sir Thomas Wallace of Craigie, then to John Fergusson of Kilkerran (d1764) and his daughter, wife of John Boswell of Knockroon, Margaret Fergusson, who apparently leased it to the Earl of Dumfries. In 1784 it was among the lands for which sasine was taken on behalf of JB.

The 1851 census shows Agnes Ferguson 42 farming 25 acres. Also living at Underwood are son John 21 ploughman, Janet Campbell 77 mother and retired farmer’s widow, 1 house servant and Jean Freebairn 11 niece.
The 1861 census shows Underwood being occupied by Hugh Harvey 25 a pitheadman iron , his wife Mary 20 and dtr Agnes 1.
In the 1881 census John Hayman  72, formerly farm grieve at Dumfries House Mains is the farmer at Underwood of 20 acres pasture along with his wife Mary 69 (Murdoch - formerly Ochiltree Mill), dtr Agnes 30, dtr Margaret 26 and grandson Thomas 4.
In 1891 census it is still John Hayman 82 now widowed with dtr Agnes 42 dairymaid, dtr Margaret 36 housekeeper and Thomas Hayman 14 grandson.
John died at Underwood in December 1891.
The 1901 census shows daughter Agnes Hayman 51 and her sister Margaret 46 farming Underwood with Thomas Hayman son 24 also a farmer.

Conf of John Hayman, sometime Land Steward, Dumfries House, Mains, nr Cumnock afterwards farmer at Underwood nr Cumnock who died 18/12/1891 at Underwood aforesaid testate granted to John Hayman, factor, Queenshill, Ringford, Kirkcudbright, his son, executor.
