Laight Farm, New Cumnock -  John Logan lived at Laight Farm and Robert Burns visited on a number of occasions, dining there on Saturday 19th October 1788 and four days later dropping in for breakfast. He knew John through his masonic links and John was very helpful in securing subscriptions for copies of his first 'Kilmarnock Edition' of his poems. A window in the west gable which once carried an inscription by Burns was removed in the 1970s.


The 1841 census shows Andrew Millar 40 and his wife Elizabeth (Craig) 20 farming Laight with Janet Miller 40, 1 Male agricultural labourer and 3 female farm servants.

The 1851 census shows Andrew Miller 51 farmer of 400 acres, his wife Elizabeth 31, 2 sons and 3 daughters ages 8yrs and under, 1 dairymaid, 1 female house servants during 1 female nurse age 15yrs.

The 1861 census shows farmer Andrew Miller 63 now a widower  farming 109 acres emp 1 man, 1 boy, and 3 women. Living there is his son William 18, son John 16, daughter Margaret 14, daughter Jessie 12, daughter Jane 11, daughter Elizabeth 9, housekeeper Nicholas Ferguson (female),  1 dairymaid and 1 female domestic servant.

The 1871 census shows William Paterson 34 farming 130 acres arable with his wife Maggie (McKerrow) 21, niece Elizabeth Paterson 22 who is a dairymaid, 1 female domestic servant, 1 ploughman and 1 male domestic servant.

1881 census shows William Paterson 45 and wife Maggie 31 farming 130 acres employing 2 men and 3 girls. They have three children under 3, William, Maggie, and  Lizzie.
They have five people living in with them: George McCrae 22, John Walls 19, farm servants, Margaret Patrick 26 dairymaid, Margaret Brown,18 general servant, and Rose Brown 13, nurse.

The 1891 census shows William Paterson 54 farming with his wife Margaret 41, 2 sons and 5 daughters age 13yrs and under, 1 Male farm servant and 2 female general domestic servants.

The 1901 census shows William Hyslop 45 farming with his wife Marion (Kennedy) 35, daughters Maggie K. 6 and Marion 2, mother-in-law Mary K. Kennedy 58, 1 dairymaid, 1 female domestic servant and 1 ploughman.
