High Plaid, Ochiltree


With the  loss of  Laigh Plaid, now  usually  just  referred to as Plaid  ( pronounced Plyde ).

The 1841 census shows John Miller 30 an agricultural labourer living in High Plaid with his wife Catherine 30 (McQuarrie) and their 5 children age 11yrs and under.
The 1851 census shows John Miller 44 a stonedyker living at High Plaid with his wife Catherine 44 and their 4 sons and 2 daughters age 13yrs and under.
The 1861 census shows John Miller 54 and agricultural labourer still living at High Plaid with his wife Catherine 52 and their children.
The 1871 census shows John Miller 62 labourer occupying High Plyde with his wife Catherine 60, dtr Eliza 31 dairymaid, son George 25 labourer, dtr Margaret 21 dressmaker and 2 grandsons ages 5 and 1.
In the 1881 census Thomas Clark 60 is a shepherd at High Plaid.  his wife Martha 55, and daughters Martha 24 and Mary 20 are dairymaid and general domestic.  Thomas C Hunter, grandson is also on the census at only 8 days.
The 1891 census shows Thomas Clark 70 a dairyman, his wife Martha 55, dtrs Martha a dairymaid and Mary a general servantt and 1 grandson.

IMO John Miller died North Plaid 2/3/1889 83, wife Cath McWharrie died North Plaid 27/5/1894 64, Elizabeth Miller died North Plaid 6/12/1902 65 (husband James Jess)

VR 1885 shows as a house but not a farm.  1905 prop. M of Bute.  1920 - 1940 prop. David Howat
