Glencairn Cottage, Ochiltree

This is another instance where there is a business combining farming and innkeeping, as in the Dumfries Arms.  A check against the Valuation Rolls shows some the Gemmell family history in Ochiltree.

Census

1841 Alexander Gemmell 50, farmer, with Jane 40, John 10, David 9, William 7, Thomas 9 months and Margaret Ramsey 19, domestic.

1851Alexander Gemmell 62, innkeeper and farmer of 2000 acres employing 2 shepherds.  Jane Gemmell 52 his wife, John 21, Alexander 15, and Thomas 10, and house servant Elizabeth Eccles 22.

Checking against the Valuation Rolls  the lands appear to be Headmark.

1861 Alexander is 72, wife Jean 62 and John 31 are at home, and Magdalen Gibson 25 is their domestic servant.  Alexander is still the inn keeper and farmer of 2000 acres of hill pasture.

1871 and John Gemmell 40, has married Sarah 39. John is described as inn keeper and farmer of 180 acres arable.  They have a daughter Euphemia, 1, and Jessie Reid 14, general domestic. 

1881 census shows John Gemmell 51 and wife Sarah 48 farming 207 acres arable and 167 acres pasture.  They employ 2 men. They also have a general domestic servant Wilhelmina McCaig 17.

1891 no record found
1901 and Sarah Gemmell is head of the household 68, and a widow.  Euphemia is a dressmaker, and they are living still in Glencairn Cottage, but no longer running the inn or managing a farm.

1875 John Gemmell is listed as a proprietor and also tenant of houses in main street, but there is no mention of land.

1885 John Gemmell, proprietor of Glencairn Cottage, main street

1895 Sarah Colville or Gemmell, widow, house main Street.
