In the 1841 census there is one Bower listed:
Thomas Brown 78, of High Linn, New Cumnock.
The 1881 census search for 'Bowers' for the whole of the county of Ayrshire yields 84 individuals with only three for the parishes we are researching.
They are :-
Robert Riddell 68, retired Bower at Benston Cottage,
Agnes Thomson 61, at Garallan, and
William Craig 28, at Rigg
1861 William Bryson 41, labourer and bower with wife Jane 39, children Andrew 14, James 12, William 9, Margaret 6, and Mary 1. Jessie Waddel 17 is their dairy servant. At Springhill, Auchinleck.
1861 David Mathieson 87 formerly farming at Waterside, New Cumnock, and then his daughter Christina took over.
1901 Alexander Sturgeon 43, at Barturk
