The 1851 census for Straid shows James Sloan 31 is farmer of 100 acres employing 2 labourers. He is living there with his wife Mary 25 and they have three children Alexander 3, Hugh 2 and infant George. They are assisted by James Cruthers 16 who is a farm labourer and 20yr old Jennet Park a house servant.
By 1861 James Sloan is in Ashmark farming 2000 acres
The 1861 census for Straid shows James Kirk 44 farming 100 acres & his wife Agnes Sloan 35 (sister of the above James Sloan), daughter Euphemia 8, son John 6, daughter Isabella 4, son Alexander 2, and domestic servants Elizabeth Miller 21 & Margaret Caldwell 17.
NB James's parents were James Kirk & Sibella Murdoch (Garclaugh)
Agnes Sloan's parents were Alexander Sloan & Euphemia Park - Brockloch
The 1871 census for Straid shows James Kirk 56 farmer of 100 acres arable & meadow, his wife Agnes 44, son John 16, daughter Sibella 14, son Alexander 12, son James 9, mary Duncan a 23yr old dairymaid and David Black 22 who is a ploughman.
The 1881 census shows James Kirk 65 farmer of 140 acres arable wrought by family and 1 girl, his wife Agnes 54, daughter Euphemia 28, sons John 26, Alexander 22 & James 19, and Annie Morrison a 16yr old general servant.
James then moved to Dalleagles Farm where his wife Agnes died 5/9/1886
James died there in 24/4/1898 his daughter Euphemia having also died there some months before on 19/1/1898.
The 1891 census for Straid shows Andrew Smith 42 farming there with his wife Jessie (Sloan) 45, daughter Agnes 15, daughter Maggie 14, son William 12, daughter Janet 10, Hugh Barr an 18yr old farm servant and Janet Burns 18 who is a domestic servant.
The 1901 census shows Andrew Smith now 51 and a widower living in Straid with his daughter Agnes McC. 25 who is a dairymaid , daughter Maggie 24 a domestic servant and son William 22 who is a ploughman. They are assisted by Janet Smith a 20yr old domestic servant.
