Orchard or Orchyard was acquired with Birnieknowe from John Cochrane about 1740 and let in 1787 and 1789 to William Murdoch's uncle, Robert Murdoch, who also had Upper Rigg in 1779. Its house repaired in 1789 and 1792, was let to Robert Wallace in 1790 and 1795.

Censuses
The 1851 census shows Agnes Matheson 39 living in Orchard 1 along with her sons Allan Boyd 11, Thomas Boyd 6 and John Boyd 3.

The 1861 census shows Elizabeth Mathieson 78 living at Main Street along with her daughter Agnes Boyd 49 and grandchildren Thomas Boyd 16 mason, John Boyd 13 an apprentice mason and William 5.

The 1871 census for Orchard, Main Street shows Agnes Boyd 58yr old widow living there with her son William a 15yr old joiner.

In 1881 Agnes Boyd a 68yr old widow is a farmer in Orchard.
The 1891 census for Orchard describes Agnes Boyd 77yr old widow as a crofter.

The 1851 census for Orchard 2 shows Elizabeth Edgert a 63yr old widow living there with her son William Matheson a 23yr old agricultural labourer and grandson Thomas Bennet 18 road labourer.

The 1871 census shows Orchard Main Street now being occupied by William Ramsay a 57yr old widower who is described as a past manager.

The 1881 census for Orchard shows Jane Boyd a joiner's wife living there with her 3 children age 4 and under.

The 1891 census shows John Boyd 43 a mason living there with his wife Jane 46.


Gone.   buildings demolished- amalgamated into Fore Rogerton when David Wardrop bought Fore Rogerton, for Adam Wardrop.

1855 prop. Sir James Boswell, tenant William Alexander.  1865 prop. Lady Boswell, tenant James Alexander.  1875 described as Rogerton and Orchard, same prop. tenant Hugh Alexander.  1905 as well as the farm houses begin to appear and increase with each valuation period.  1935 tenant Mrs Agnes Alexander.  1940 prop. Adam Wardrop.
