1940, owner James McKerrow, no tenant shown. (Valuation Roll). VR shows that from 1875 onwards houses were being built and occupied, presumably because coal was being mined on the land.
The 1851 census shows Hugh Miller 63 farmer of 30 acres and his wife Agnes (Craig) 64. Their daughter Jane 34, son Hugh 18, grand-daughter Jane Longwell 16 (Jane's daughter) are all employed at home while their grandson William Girvan 5 (Agnes's son) is learning at home.
Hugh snr died 2/11/1858.
The 1861 census shows Agnes Craig, now a widow, farming 34 acres (employing 1 man & 2 women), son Hugh Miller 28 and 2 female farm servants.
The 1871 census shows son Hugh Miller 39 now farming 32 acres 22 arable with his wife Ann (Harper) 32 and their children Hugh 6, Anne 5, John 3 & Agnes 1. Also living there is Hugh's 80 year old mother Agnes Miller.
The 1881 census shows Hugh Miller 49 farming 30 acres 22 arable with wife Ann 42, son Hugh 16, son John 13, dtr Agnes 11, son James 9, son William 6, son David 4 and dtr Margaret 2.
The 1891 census shows Hugh Millar 58 farming Commondyke with his wife Ann 52, son David 14, dtr Margaret 12, daughter Jessie 9 and Ann Maider 2 grand-daughter.
The 1901 census shows Hugh Millar 69 farming with wife Ann 62, dtr Margaret 22, dtr Jessie 19 and Jessie's son William Millar 2 months, grand-daughter Annie Miller 12 and William McIlwraith an 80yr old boarder.
Hugh Miller died 20/2/1918 at Commondyke Farm.
