Lochingerroch, New Cumnock


Location 55 21 32N, 4 10 23W in Glen Afton.

On 1654 Blaeu Atlas there is Lachan garach b (burn? bridge?) There's also Ladringerah to the north.

Lochingirroch - a farmhouse occupied by Mr John Mitchell, the property of the Marquis of Bute.

Lochingirroch Burn - a stream which divides the farms of Pencloe and Lochingirroch and runs northerly into the Afton.

 The 1841 census shows John Mitchell  35 son of the late Hugh, farming Lochengerroch along with his   mother Jane (Dunn) 60, Hugh Findlay 15, Jane Findlay 10, James Welsh 20 & William Stevenson 55   both agricultural labourers, farm servants Jane Millar 20 & Cathrine Munwhur 10. They have a 40yr old lodger Elizabeth Balfour also living there.

The 1851 census shows widow Jane Mitchel 78 living there with her granddaughter Jane Findlay 18 who is a house servant, Crawford McMichael 18 farm servant and Thomas Campbell 24 shepherd.

The 1861 census shows John Mitchell 58 farmer of 2200 acres employing 4 men and 1 woman, his wife Jane (McCormick) 39 and children Margaret 18, Mary O. (Osborn) 17, Hugh 15, Jane D. (Dunn) 13, Robert 11, Agnes 9, William 7, Jessie 5, Ellen 3, Elizabeth 1 and Johanna 4months. He is assisted by Robert Kennyoun 19 shepherd, James Broadfoot 18 ploughman and Mary Black 18 the dairymaid.

The 1871 census shows John Mitchell 68 farmer of 2000 acres 50 arable his wife Jane 49 and children Margaret 28, Hugh 25, Jane 23, Robert 21, Agnes 19, William 17, Jessie 15, Helen 13, Elizabeth 11, Joanna 10 and Thomas 7. He employs William Muncie 20 as a shepherd.

The 1881 census shows John Mitchell 78 farmer of 1200 acres 18 arable with his wife Jane 59, son Robert 31, daughter Helen 23, daughter Elizabeth 21 and daughter Anna 20.
John Mitchell died in 1886

John Mitchell died 7/4/1886 at Lochingarroch

The 1891 census shows that his widow Jane 69 is now running the farm with the assistance of daughter Agnes, daughter Jessie 35, son Thomas F. 27 and farm servant Andrew Black 19. Also living there are her grandchildren Sarah K Paterson 13 & Hugh M. Purdie 4.

Jane died at Lochingerroch 15/9/1895

Conf. of John Mitchell, farmer, Lochingarroch, New Cumnock who died 7/4/1886 at Lochingarroch aforesaid testate. Granted at Ayr to Gavin Paterson, farmer, Coalcreoch, New Cumnock, his son-in-law and John Lawrie, farmer, Craighouse, Knockburnie there, his nephew, executors.

Helen Barclay Muir died in 1897 at New Cumnock at the age of 34yrs

The 1901 census shows James Muir now a 43yr old widower farming Lochingerroch. He is assisted by housekeeper Bessie Young 25, domestic servant Susan Hutchison 15, shepherd William Welsh 27 and ploughman Thomas Flynn 35.

 Gavin Paterson died there 25/8/1919
