Also known as Lochhill
Location OS first edition
In the Valuation roll, Lochhill is also referred to as East Lowes. The 1851 census infers that the two properties are distinct.
Lochhill Farm was re-named as East Lowes (It has since reverted to Lochhill)
Census
1841 shows James Weir 35 farmer, and Elizabeth 40 are listed for Laneside. Family, David Weir 15, and servants Rankin Park 25, Margaret Shields 12, and Robert Wallace 25. I can find no reference to this as a farm name in Scotlands Places, or on any map - Lochhill farm is situated close to the turnpike road, could this be yet another name for Lochhill or East Lowes? Valuation Roll
1865 proprietor Marquis of Bute, tenant James Weir (who died there in 1879)
James Weir is the name that appears through the valuation roll as tenant until 1920. The Weir family moved to Warnford, Troon, where there was a marriage announcement for Margaret Sloan Weir (daughter) who married James Hair of Kilmarnock in 1930, and another in 1929 for Elizabeth Clarke Weir to James Howie Wallace of Kilmarnock.
1925 proprietor Walter Young
Probate Ayr 28/8/1919
James Weir, farmer, Lochhill, New Cumnock died 28/3/1919 at Lochhill aforesaid testate. Confirmation granted at Ayr to Margaret Sloan or weir his widow, Walter Young farmer Mid-Lowes New Cumnock, and James Weir & George Weir, assistant draper, both of Lochhill aforesaid his sons/executors.
The farm was run by the Young family, who have provided these photographs from their time there. Scotlands Places of 1855/57 describes Lochhill as a farm house and offices close to the turnpike road, occupied by Mr James Weir. It would be interesting to find out when the fine farmhouse facing the road was built, and if it was contemporary with the farm buildings set behind shown in the 1957 photograph.
In 2020 Brian Young opened a milk vending machine on the roadside site.
