Census
1851 James Houston 26, agricultural labourer with wife Helen 23, children John 3, Janet 1, and James under 1. Servant Elisabeth Tinpeny 18.
James' parents were at Garclough, the neighbouring farm.
1861 Farming 104 acres, James and Helen now have nine children. New ones are William 8, David 6, Mary 4, Robert 3, George 1 and Helen under 1. Servants are Mary Gilmour 14, and Margaret McMillan 30, dairymaid.
1871 John Houston 29, dairyman with wife Grace 24, children Mary V 4, George 2, Jane G under 1 and visitor Jane Houston 8. Elizabeth McCarthey 14 is a domestic.
1881 John and Grace have added to their family with Alexander 8, John 6, Grace 5, and Margaret 1. Servants are Grace Goldie 16, and Alexander Pearson 15.
1891 John and Grace are listed for Garclough (not sure if that is Little or not). They have had more children; Janet S 9, William 8, James 6, Mary V 4, Hugh S 1, and a visitor, David Houston 18, a railway porter.
Alexander Shankland died there 1892 age 85, son of Hugh, husband of Agnes Dalziel (not first wife)
1901 John and daughter Grace 23 listed as Garclaugh, with Margaret 21, James 16, Mary 14, and Hugh 11.
I am assuming the Houstons continued living at Little Garclough because by the 1880s the Baird family had settled in Meikle Garclough.
Hugh Sloan was the farmer in 20th century
