The 1841 census shows James Wilson 41 farming Holehouse with his wife Elizabeth 35, Agnes Greirson a farm servant and Samuel Black 20.
The 1851 census shows Alexander Steel 51 farmer of 105 acres employing 3 labourers, his father Robert Steel 80 a retired farmer, John Steel 26 his cousin working as a farm labourer, Janet Steel 40 his sister house servant, Mary Steel 23 his cousin also a house servant, Hugh Steel 16 his cousin farm labourer, Hugh Steel 13 his cousin a farm labourer, Jane Wilson 20 his niece a house servant and Mary Steel 12 also his niece.
The 1861 census shows Alexander Steel 61 farming 105 acres along with his sister Janet 50 housekeeper, niece Mary Steel 22 a domestic servant, 1 dairymaid, 1 ploughman and 1 male agricultural labourer.
The 1871 census shows Alexander Steel 71 farmer of 121 acres employing 2 labourers 1 boy, his sister Janet 60 housekeeper, Matthew Steel 16 farm servant, James Steel 9 and 2 female domestic servants.
The 1881 census shows Alexander Steel now 82 farming 120 acres arable employing 2 men and 2 women. His sister Janet 70 is housekeeper, nephew James Steel 19 a farm servant and 2 female general domestic servants. Also living there are his 3 nephews Robert 11, James 9 and Hugh 6 Rorison.
The 1891 census shows Janet Steel 81 and James Steel 29 nephew as joint farmers. They are assisted by niece Mary Rorison 52 who is a dairymaid, Hugh Rorison 16 nephew farm servant, Janet Rorison 14 niece and 1 female general domestic servant.
The 1901 census shows James Steel 39 farming Holehouse. His father John Steel 76 is living there along with Mary McCurdie 21 the housekeeper, 1 female general domestic and 1 male farm servant.
