Hillhead, Auchinleck

Location






In Dr Mark Jardine's website on the Covenanters, he mentions the capture of William Murray from Hillhead.  He had attended a conventicle and was armed with a sword.  The event was held at the Polbaith Burn in 1687.

The 1851 census for Hillhead shows James Blair 28 farmer of 110 acres arable and wife Lillias 28, son David 3, son John 1, 2 female house servants and 1 male farm servant.

The 1861 census shows James Blair 40 now farming 120 acres and employing 1 man & 1 woman. He is assisted by his wife Lillias 40 and have 8 children - Mary 14, David 13, John 11, Lillias 9, Marrion 7, James 6, Agness 3 and infant Robert. Also recorded are 1 male agricultural labourer and 1 female domestic presumably aforesaid.

The 1871 census shows Hillhead now being occupied by Ivie Aird 33 farmer of 36 acres arable with wife Elizabeth (Young), daughter Jane Wilson Aird 8, son James 6, daughter Mary 2, son Mathew who is under 1yr old and servant Marion Campbell 16.

1881 census shows  John Logan 36 is a farmer, with his acreage included in Duncanziemer. His wife Sarah 36, son John 9, Maggie 7, and James 3 are with him as is Barbara Gordon 16 servant.
by 1891 this family had moved to High Auchengibbert, Old Cumnock

The 1891 census shows Robert Dalgliesh 37 now farming Hillhead with his wife Jane 30, daughter Margaret 8, son James 6, son William 3 and 1 female general servant.
In 1901 Robert Dalgiesh & family are farming Hillend Farm, Kilwinning.

There are two 1901 censuses for Hillhead.
