Glenside or Glensyde was let to Robert Smith, who also rented an Inclosure for hay, in 1784 and 1789 and to Archibald Steele in 1789 and 1791.
This was discovered amongst the Boswell Papers, transcribed, and illustrates the difficulties that a tenant farmer could sometimes be unable to avoid.

I Robert Smith in Glensyde considering that the Eral of Dumfries has applied to me for liberty to carry a road from his gate thoro my ground to the church road and to further I have acquainted Lord Auchinleck my master of this and he has ensignified to me that he is unwilling to agree to this proposal I being being resolved to grant ofip Lord Auchinleck in order to prevent all further solicitations from the said Eral hereby oblige me to grant no liberty to the said Eral but to concord with Lord Auchinleck in opposing any such attempts and authorise him if he thinks proper to use my name in that opposition and this I oblige me not to resist under the penalty of one hand appraised hereby in persons wrote by James Bruce gardener at Auchinleckare subscribed by me at Auchinleck this twenty sevend of April seventeen hundred and seventy four before these witnesses

The 1851 census shows Jacob Smith 46 farmer of 188 acres employing 2 men & 1 boy along with his wife Janet 45 (Osborne), son William 8, daughters Margaret 6 and Janet 4, 2 male farm servants, 3 female house servants and a family of Irish vagrants.
The 1861 census shows Janet Smith a 55yr old widow farming 280 acres employing 2 men and 2 boys assisted by her son William 18, daughters Margaret 16 & Janet 15, 2 female domestic servants and 2 male domestic servants.
The 1871 census shows Janet 66 and her unmarried son William 28 farming 208 acres arable employing 2 men, 2 women and 1 boy. Also living there are her 2 nieces Margaret & Mary Osbourne working as domestic servants, nephew Jacob S Findlay 11, 1 male farm servant, 1 herd boy and 1 female general servant.
1881 census shows William Smith 38 and his wife Jane 33 (Samson). Janet Smith 77, William's mother is also living at Glenside
