Glenconner, Ochiltree

Horse Tax 1797-98  John Tennant  4 horses 3 taxed.

John Tennant was  farming at Laigh Corton , Alloway where  his  son Charles Tennant was born in 1768 ( d 1868 - great  industrialist , made a  fortune  from  the  invention of  bleaching powder) . He  built  the  St Rollux  chemical works  by  the  canal   outside  Glasgow and  later was a railway  pioneer in  Glasgow with  his  friend  George Stephenson . The  family   later  took  their  title  from   the  farm  of  Glenconner ) . John Tennant  ( ironic  name  for  a  factor ) was factor to Lady Glencairn of Ochiltree, and   was a  close  friend  of Robert Burns and  Burns' father, witnessing   at  Burns' christening.

Margot Asquith ( nee Tennant, wife  of   the  Prime Minister ) was a  descendant .

Glenconner  was  at  one  time   farmed  with Lessnessock  and  Rottenrow , as part  of  the famous  pedigree Ayrshire herd, under the  Lessnessock prefix.

1881 census William Brown 70 is farming 380 acres arable employing 3 men and 2 women.
His niece Catherine Hettrick 43 is his housekeeper with Janet Blythe 18 and Janet Brown 16 domestic servants.
William died in December 1881

1891 Quintin Brown 32, and brother David 34 are farming Glenconner.  They have dairymaid Janet McDade 21, and Susan Ross 17 as their general domestic.

In 1875, Quintin is reportedly living at Garleffan in the results of the horse competition in the Ayrshire Yeomanry Cavalry Review and Races.
In 1884 Irvine Herald Private Quentin Brown is from Glenconner.
So unless there are two Quintin browns in the Yeomanry, our Quintin and brother David are the sons of John and Sarah (Sloan) Brown and were born at Barlosh.

1901 Quintin Brown 42 is farming with servants John Hunter 39, ploughman, Elizabeth Curragh 25, housekeeper and dairymaid, and Jemima Drair 18, general domestic.
