In the sale of lands of the Ochiltree estate in 1844, the farms of Finlayston and Nether Finlayston were in one lot, also including certain town parks to the south west of Ochiltree village and ten acres plus of woodland. Nether Finlayston became known as Netherton.

The 1881 census shows James Wilson 33, and his wife Mary 39. They have six children all under 9. They are farming 216 acres arable employing 1 man, 2 women, and 1 boy.
1891 and James and Mary have added to their family. They are Marion 19, Jane 18, Mary 16, Margaret 15, Andrew 12, Elizabeth 10, John 7, and James 6. Mother in Law Marion Bowman, widow 78 and Jane McInnes 21 general servant complete the household.

James Wilson's daughter Mary was a qualified teacher and married a cleric in 1902 as shown in this cutting from Gentlewoman 26 April.
James's son Andrew took over the running of the farm and incorporated Netherton and Burnockholm Braes, and was a judge of cattle at the shows as well as a competitor as shown by the number of newspaper references.
