1851 census William Howatson 42 is a farmer of 800 acres employing 2 men at Mortonmuir beside Cronberry along with his wife Jean (Samson) 39, son William 11, son John 10, dtr Mary 8, dtr Jean 4, son Andrew 5, son Robert 3, son George 1, 1 dairymaid, 1 housemaid, 2 male agricultural labourers, 1 herd boy and 1 shepherd.
1861 census shows William Howatson 52 is a farmer of 800 acres at Cronberry House along with his wife Jane 48, dtr Mary Anne 18, son Andrew 15, son Robert Baird Howatson 13, son George 10, son William 8, dtr Jessie 6, dtr Agnes 3, 2 ploughmen, 2 male agricultural labourers, 1 shepherd, 2 dairymaids and 1 housemaid.
1871 census William Howatson 62 is a farmer of 880 acres at Cronberry Farm along with his wife Janet 62, son Robert 22 a mechanical engineer, son William 19, dtr Agnes 13, 1 housemaid, 2 female servants and 2 male farm servants.
1881 census William Howatson 72 is a farmer of 1050 Acres, 250 Arable at Morten Moor farm along with his wife Jane 69, dtr Agnes 23, sister Janet 88, 1 female domestic servant and 1 male farm servant.
He died in 1882.
The 1891 census shows Morton Muir being occupied by William Forsyth 32 as farm manager along with 1 female domestic servant and 2 shepherds.
The 1901 census shows Morton Muir Farm still being occupied by William Forsythe 42 foreman on farm, his nephew John 17 farm servant, 1 housekeeper and 2 female farm servants.

Conf of William Howatson, sometime farmer, Cronberry, Parish of Auchinleck thereafter residing there who died 13/11/1882 at Cronberry aforesaid testate. Granted to Charles Howatson of Dornel, his son, Jane Samson or Howatson, Cronberry aforesaid, his widow and William Murray Samson Howatson farmer Carskeoch, Patna near Ayr - executors.
