'Most of the farms in the parish kept sheep or cattle. The sheep were mainly black-faced, with some smaller herds of Leicester, Bakewell, Southdown and Cheviot breeds. At Burnton farm there was a herd of black Egyptian sheep, noted for their wool.'


1797-1836 William Muir and Elizabeth Steven. Their twin sons Alexander and Andrew both appear to be farming at Burnton in 1841 census.

1861 census Burnton shows Robert Brown 43 ploughman, 2 Hetterick nieces another 2 male servants
1871 census shows Robert Brown 53 Farmer 100 Ac Arable with niece son and a servant
1881 census shows Robert Brown 30 farming 140 acres arable employing 1 man and 2 girls.
Residing at Burnton are Mary Gemmell 27, dairymaid, John Hunter 19, and Jane Ramage both farm servants
