ScotlandsPlaces - 1855-1857 - Burnfoot - A farmhouse and offices occupied by J & M Hill the property of A. Cunningham of Logan, Old Cumnock. (This is a transcription error and probably meant to be J & M Still - however it is actually Stitt - see Auld Kirkyard below)
The 1841 census for Burnfoot Farm, New Cumnock shows Janet Still 60, son James Still 35, son Michael Still 35, daughter Agnes Still 25, William Howat 15, James Howat 14, Agnes Hyslop 15, Margaret Brown 15, Mary Wilson 12 and Hannah Thomas 30.
The 1851 census shows Janet Still 79 widow farmer of 300 acres employing 3 labourers. She is assisted by her farmer sons James 50 & Michael 45, daughter Agnes 35 who is responsible for domestic affairs, William Howat a 25yr old farm servant, Robert Howat 17 also a farm servant, John Vass 16 farm servant, Elizabeth Monteith 20 farm servant, Janet Dunbar 17 farm servant,. The Minister of The R.P. Church Alexander Young 25 is visiting.
The 1861 census shows James Still 60 farmer of 640 acres employing 3 men & a woman. He is assisted by his brother Michael 55, brother-in-law William Howat 35 ploughman, his now married sister Agnes Howat 45 who is housekeeper, his nephew James Howat 6,
John Walls 60 who is a shepherd, Alexander Houston a 17yr old agricultural labourer, Michael Still boarder who is a scholar and domestic servants Jane Gilmour 22, Jan McHervail 19 & Margaret McLatchie 20.
The 1871 census shows James Still 71 and brother Michael 68 farming 200 acres of which 100 are arable. They are assisted by their married sister Agnes Howat 60 who is housekeeper, her husband William Howat 49 who is now a foreman, their son James Howat 16, Michael Still now 26 and a ploughman, James Farquhar 16 general servant, Annie Tenant 20 kitchenmaid and general servants Katherine McLatchie 18 & Jean Wilson 34.
James Stitt died at Burnfoot 13/1/1875, brother Michael died at Burnfoot 7/10/1873 and sister Agnes died at Burnfoot 24/2/1877
The 1881 census shows William Howat 54 and now a widower farming 160 acres employing 2 men, 1 boy and 2 women. He is assisted by his son James Howat 26, James Neily 40 dairyman, farm servant John White 18, Jane Smith 24 domestic servant and Susan McCutcheon a 17yr old general servant. Henry Thomson a 29yr old chimney sweep is boarding with them.
William Howat died 4/1/1892
The 1891 census shows Burnfoot Farm now being farmed by John Watson and his sister Maggie 21. They are assisted by farm servant Hugh Shankland 28, Jane Wilson 24 dairymaid and Janet Johnstone an 18yr old general servant. Andrew Watson a 16yr old bank clerk is visiting.
The 1901 census shows John Watson 41 still farming there along with his wife Janet 38, farm servant Peter Telfer 30, dairymaid Mary Baird 26 and Agnes Polland an unmarried 69yr old farm servant.
