No Horse Tax Found For Little Creoch

A good Farmhouse and steading situated at the South West margin of Creoch Loch occupied by William Paterson the property of the Marquis of Bute.

David Weir and Agnes Corsbie had 5 children born in Little Creoch between 1736 and 1746.

Agnes Mitchell  born 20/7/1746 and Margaret Mitchell born 2/10/1748 both in Little Creoch. Their parents were Robert Mitchell and Margaret Weir. Agnes married John Murdoch in 1761 (Auchengibbert)

Helen Weir had an illegitimate son Hugh born 16/12/1739 in Creoch (fa: Hugh Crawford)

1841 census for Creoch has Helen Paterson 70 Elizabeth Paterson 45 6 servants and 7 lodgers

The 1851 census for Little Creoch shows John Paterson 50 farming 250 acres employing 3 labourers. He is assisted by his wife Helen (Harper) 46 and they have 2 children, John 9 and Margaret 5. Also recorded on the census is farm labourer William Brown, 1 dairymaid, 1 housemaid and  27yrs old beggar John McNeal.

The 1861 census shows John Paterson 60 farming 225 acres employing 2 shepherds along with his wife Helen 56, son John 18, 2 ploughmen, 1 housemaid, 1 dairymaid, 1 stableboy and 1 servant. William McAllister a basket maker and his family are also there. This is likely to be a travelling family.

The 1871 census has transcribed Little Creoch as Benston. Alexander Arthur is farming Benston in 1871 so this is most likely to be an error in transcription. There is also a hillock on Little Creoch named Benston Mount. John Paterson 70 is farming 2000 acres of which 300 are arable employing 2 shepherds, 1 man and 3 boys. He is assisted by his wife Helen H Paterson 65, son John 28, 2 male farm servants, 1 dairymaid and 1 housemaid.

John Paterson died in 1883 and his son John took over.

The 1881 census shows son John Paterson 38 farming Little Creoch along with his wife Margaret (Sloan Wilson) 40, John Kelly 37 a horse trainer, Archibald Stewart a dairyman, 2 female general servants, 1 male general servant and 1 housemaid.

John Paterson and his wife Margaret moved to Kirkton, Tyndrum, Perthshire where Margaret died 28/11/1909. John then married Maggie McInnes, his 32yrs old housekeeper 21/6/1912. He died at Kirkton 10/5/1930.

The 1891 census shows John Sloan 39 now farming Little Creoch along with his wife Elizabeth (Nairn) 33 who he had married 18/4/1857 at Singlegills, Mauchline. They have four children - William 7, Bryce Nairn 6, Margaret W.W. 4 and John 2. They are assisted by 1 ploughman, 1 male farm servant and 2 female general domestic servants.

The 1901 census shows John Sloan 49 farming Little Creoch along with his wife Elizabeth 43, son Bryce 16, daughter Margaret 14, son John 12, daughter Elizabeth 8, son Hugh 5, daughter Mary 1, 1 dairymaid, 1 female general domestic and 1 male farm servant.
