Bobby Guthrie’s comment on CHG Fb: “George Sanderson in New Cumnock far and Away writes  ‘Glenlee farm on the Deugh Water the tenants have always handed down a folk lore of Robert the Bruce resting there and an Anglo Norman knight, Bohoun, who was hunting Bruce has his name remembered in the Craigs of Bohoun at the nearby source of Connelburn.’  It used to be paired with Lochingerroch up Afton and later Lochmeharb in the Valuation Rolls.”


The 1851 census for Glenlee, New Cumnock shows 58yr old shepherd John Ferguson living there with his wife Janet 60, daughter Agnes 18, grandson Thomas Ferguson 7 and grandson John McCulloch age 2yrs.

The 1861 census shows shepherd John Ferguson now age 69 still living there with his wife Janet 71, son David 49 who is also a shepherd, son-in-law James McMillan 28, daughter Elizabeth 31 (James's wife), grandsons John McCulloch 13 and Thomas McMillan 1. Visiting them is Margaret Campbell a 73yr old vagrant who was born in Ireland.

By 1871 Glenlee is now occupied by another shepherd, 36yr old Andrew Murray, his wife Susanna 37 and their children William 10, David 8, Janet 6, Robert4, Susanna 4, Nicholas (daughter) 2 and Elizabeth 8 months.

In 1881 61 yr old shepherd Archibald Robertson is living there with his wife Janet 59 and Violet their daughter who is 17.

The 1891 census shows shepherd Thomas McMillan 24 now occupying the cottage along with his wife Martha 26 and daughter Martha 11 months.

By 1901 Jane Ferguson 57 is living there with her son John who is 25 and a shepherd.
