The 1841 census for Tobergill, Stair shows hand loom weaver John Kay 38 living there with Helen Kay 70, sister Mary Kay 40, brother William Kay 33 who is also a hand loom weaver and sister Jannet Kay 25.
The 1851 census shows John Kay 48, hand loom weaver, sister Mary 51 who is a hand spinner, brother William who is also a hand loom weaver and sister Janet 39 who is their housekeeper.
In 1861 only 54yr old William Kay, hand loom weaver, is living at Tobergill with his sister Janet housekeeper.
By the 1871 census 63yr old William Kay is farming 23 acres arable and his sister Janet 61 is the housekeeper.
1881 has two separate censuses for Tobergill.
Mary Smith 76 housekeeper and
Janet Kay 71 housekeeper.

By the 1891 census Tobergill, Stair has new tenants. Thomas Beattie 63 is a railway surfaceman who is living there with his 61yr old wife Jane (Smith), daughter Eliza 34 and grandson Robert Beattie 9.
Boundary changes meant that Tobergill has now moved from the Parish of Stair into the Parish of Ochiltree.
The 1901 census shows widower Thomas Beattie 72 now described as a farmer. He is assisted by his daughter Eliza 45.
