The 1841 census for Clayslaps shows John Welsh a 40yr old agricultural labourer living there with his wife Helen 35 and Jane Welsh 74.

1851 census - cannot find

The 1861 census shows Clayslaps Cottage being occupied by Andrew Beattie 67 a farmer of 8 acres and his wife Agnes 69. Andrew lived in Bowhouse in 1851 and Bowes in 1871 In 1881 Andrew was the toll keeper at Bowes Cottage..
