Glenshamrock Farm, Auchinleck

Location: About 1 mile from Auchinleck. 0.7 miles from Auchinleck Academy. The farmhouse was put up for sale with outbuildings and some land in 2020 and has been beautifully renovated into a substantial home with workshops.

Glenshamrock farm was originally in the Parish of Sorn but due to boundary changes between 1901 and 1905 it became part of the Parish of Auchinleck. 

Farm Horse Tax Rolls 1797/98 - Mungo Reid, Glenshamrock - 4 horses   3 liable in duty   6s.

The 1851 census for Glenshameroch, Sorn show Nicholas Kennedy (female) widow of 78 with son James her 40yr old unmarried son farming 150 acres and 300 moor employing 2 labourers and 1 boy.They are assisted by another unmarried son Samuel 38 who is a farm labourer, unmarried daughter Elizabeth 36 who is employed at home, 1 female house servant and a 13yr old boy shepherd.

The 1861 census census for Glenshamerough, Sorn shows James Kennedy 52 still unmarried farming 400 acres and employing 5 labourers and 2 boys. He is assisted by his unmarried brother Samuel who is a shepherd, 1 ploughman, 1 male agricultural labourer, a 10yr old cattle herd boy, 1 dairymaid and 1 female domestic servant.

The 1871 census for Glenshameroch, Sorn shows James Kennedy 61 farmer of 695 acres has taken a young wife Margaret (Anderson) who is 24 and they have 3 young children Marion 5, James 4 and daughter Nicholas Findlater Kennedy. They employ 1 female general servant and 2 male farm servants.

The 1881 census for Glenshamroch, Sorn shows James Kennedy now 75 farming 654 acres of which 154 are arable assisted by his wife Margaret 37, daughter Marion 15, son James 13, daughter Nicholas 12 and 1 male general servant.

James Kennedy died 13/6/1885 at Glenshamrock.

The 1891 census for Glenshamrock, Sorn shows his widow Margaret farming there with the assistance of her farmer son James 23, daughter Marion 25, Margaret Anderson 16 a farm servant and 2 male farm servants.

The 1901 census shows son James 33 now farming at Glenshamrock, Sorn assisted by his wife Maggie 25 (Wardrop, Rigg Farm), their three children James 5, Agnes 3 and Samuel 1, 1 65yr old ploughman, 1 70yr old shepherd, 1 cow boy age 12, 1 dairymaid and 1 domestic nurse age 13yrs.
