Agricultural improvements required in the 19th century as land cultivation increased, were reflected in the innovations seen in farm implements as this clipping from the Ayr Advertiser of April 1888 of the show at Ayr illustrates. The local shows were also an important element in showcasing new products and extremely well subscribed.

Thomas, a blacksmith in Cumnock, exhibited his workmanship across the country at most of the show venues.  The McCriricks also produced prize winning cheese presses and dairy equipment.
