1881 census shows John Steel 78, and wife Isabella (Donald) 58 farming Fardenreoch. There is no indication of acreage but they have three adult children living at home; William 30, James 28, and Mary 26. They have four general servants living in; John Hose 18, Margaret Ness 22, Catherine McKie 19, and Agnes Boyle 15. Also in the house is their grand daughter Mary Taylor 6.

The 1841 census shows John Templeton farming with his wife Crawford (Arthur), 4 daughters, Isabella 7, Elizabeth 5, Agness 3 and Mary 1. Servants are Alexander Thomson 15, John McTurk 14, Campbell Telford 66, Elizabeth Campbell 15 and Agness Dalziel 14.
The 1851 census shows John Templeton and his wife Crawford farming 500 acres, daughters Jane 20, Sibella 18, Elizabeth 15, Agnes 13, Mary 11, Margaret 6, Andrietta 2. John's mother Sibella Templeton (Timpany) age 80yrs, 1 dairymaid Jane Richmond 22, and 1 housemaid Sarah Dalgiel 15.
John and Isabella came from Cairnsaigh farm, Galston. John must have been married before, as he already has adult sons, and Isabella was only 28 in the 1851 census. The 1841 census for Cairnsaigh has John with wife Helen, and children Alexander, John, Robert, and Agnes.
The 1861 census shows John Steel 58 along with his wife Isabella 38 farming 340 acres with son Robert age 25yrs. Children William 10. James 8, Mary 6, David under 1, and William 2. Servants are Daniel Watson 51, Elisabeth Alexander 23, Agness McLauchlan 19, dairymaid, Mary Sanderson 12, and Grace Fargusson 9, nurse.
The 1871 census shows John Steele 68 farming 562 acres of which 285 are arable employing 4 men and 3 women. Also living there are his sons William 20, James 18(banker's clerk), son David aged 10yrs old, daughter Mary 16. Servants are James Eskdale 25, William McLeod 22, John McKenzie 22, Ann Toward 17, Agness Halbert 16, Janet McKenzie 16, and visitor James McKie 49, shepherd. (Can't locate Isabella on transcript)

Also living on the farm are daughters Mary Ferguson Steele age 6yrs, Isabella Donald Steele age 1yr and son John age 5yrs, 2 male farm servants and 3 domestic female general servants.
The 1901 census shows William Steele farming with his wife Elizabeth, son John age 15yrs, daughters Mary F. and Isabella D., and 3 domestic female general servants.

Crawford Arthur or Templeton, Bank, New Cumnock who died 6/11/1878 at Bank aforesaid intestate. Granted at Ayr to Mary Templeton, domestic servant, National Bank, Ayr, her daughter executrix next-of-kin.

Conf of John Steel, Greenburn, New Cumnock who died at Greenburn aforesaid testate. Granted at Ayr to Alexander Steel, farmer, Burnhead, Galston, his brother and William Steel, farmer, Fardenreoch, his son - executors.
