The 1841 census shows Hugh Wallace 60 farming West Tarelgin with his wife Margaret (Kay/Key) 55, Marrion Wallace 20 and Sarah Wallace 15.
The 1851 census shows Hugh Wallace 72 farmer of 140 acres employing 3 labourers, wife Margaret 68, dtr Margaret 35, son Hugh 32, 2 Male farm labourers and 1 female house servant.
Hugh Wallace died in 1860
The 1861 census shows son Hugh Wallace 42 now farming 194 acres employing 2 labourers with wife Jane 32 (Sloan), son Hugh 3, son Robert 1, dtr Jane 4 months, 1 Male farm servant, 1 ploughman and 3 female domestic servants.
The 1871 census shows Hugh Wallace 52 farming 199 acres with his wife Jane 47, son Hugh 13, son Robert 11, dtr Jane 10, dtr Margaret 8, son Andrew 3, dtr Mary 2, son James 3 months, James Wallace 19 farm servant, 1 other farm servant and 3 female farm servants.
1881 census shows Jane Wallace 52  is now a widow. The farm is 125 acres arable 
employing 1 man 3 women and 1 boy.  Her family are also helping run the farm. They are: Hugh 23, Robert 21, Jane 21 dairymaid, Maggie 18 cook domestic, Andrew 13, Mary 12, and James 10 are scholars.  Maggie Torrence 15 is their general domestic.
The 1891 census shows Jane Wallace 61 farming West Tarelgin with the help of her son Hugh 32, son Robert 31, dtr Maggie 27, son Andrew 23, dtr Mary 22 and son James 20.
The 1901 census shows Jane 72 farming West Tarelgin with the help of her son Hugh 43, son Andrew 33, dtr Mary 32, son James 30 and 1 female general servant.

A trawl of the Ayrshire newspapers indicates that Wallaces were living at West Tarelgin well into the late 1880s. The Montgomerie family are only referred to as living at Tarelgin over the same period
