Tarbeg  (also known as  Mid Tarbeg) and West Tarbeg

1786 baptism: William Roxburgh lawful son of James Roxburgh and Margaret Brown in Tarbeg was born on Nov 3 and baptised on Nov 6 1796 in Ochiltree.

1841 census Andrew Sloan 65 is the farmer with wife Janet (Lymburner) 3 children and 1 other female and David Guthrie 20 student

1851 census Andrew Sloan 75 at Mid Tarbeg with daughter Mary  son Andrew and 2 servants.
Andrew Sloan died soon after the census in 1851.

1861 census shows Andrew's son  Robert Sloan 43 Farmer of 72 Acres Employing 1 Labourer) with young children dairymaid

1871 census Mid Tarbeg Robert Sloan 53 farmer Of 72 Acres Arable Employing 1 Labourer 1 Boy

The 1881 census shows Robert Sloan 63 and his wife Janet 48 farming 150 acres arable employing 1 man 1 boy and 3 girls. Also living with them are Andrew 29, James 21 their sons, and Margaret Hislop Robert's sister in law. They have three servants living in.
Note the increase in acreage. It could have been around then when the lands of East Tarbeg were incorporated into the main farm of Tarbeg.

1891 census still Robert Sloan with 2 sons and niece and 4 servants
He died in September 1891 with an estate worth over £1000.

We need some information here as there is no tenant registered in the Valuation Rolls, nor is there an entry in the census yet discovered.

West Tarbeg appears to have been a residence. There are many such associated cottages etc required by farms.  Whether West Tarbeg was ever a farm in its own right, or always part of a larger farm is unclear.
1841 census
James McKinna 32, a joiner, John McKinna 1 month, Mary Pagan 20, and Jane McClelland.

Also at West Tarbeg are James Mitchell 25, farm servant, Helen Mitchell 20 and James 1.

1851 West Terbeg Cottage
John Sloan 54 ag Lab, and wife Jane 43.  Their family with them are Jocobina 17, a hand sewer, John 15, a pupil teacher, Margaret 14, also a hand sewer, and Robert 12, Jane 7, and Janet Ann 4.

1861 James Rodger 52 is a ploughman living with his family at West Tarbeg. They are wife Margaret 29, sons Anthony 23 and John 2, and daughters Ann10, Elizabeth 7, and Jessie 4.

1871 West Tarbeg Bernard Murray 58 is living with his family wife Helen 60, Helen daughter 37 and grandchildren Sarah 6 and Barbara 5.
Also John Campbell 39 and wife Agnes 30 both farm workers with their son James 9.

There are no census returns for West Tarbeg of Terbeg Cottage after this.

Around the  late 1970s , Hugh F  Watson ( in  High  Tarbeg ) bought  Laigh Tarbeg from the  Connells and his  two  sons now  farm  the  Tarbegs - James in  H  Tarbeg  and  Hugh  in  Low  Tarbeg (  which  has  a  modern  setup  with  robots milking  the  cows).
